The Aegean Airlines holiday flight from Athens was scheduled for Madrid while this incident happened. The crew along with the pilot took the situation seriously and decided to divert the plane to Mallorca.
There were bomb squad officers at the airport and the plane was met by emergency crews on the runway. However, after the passengers were searched at the scene it emerged the alert was a false alarm.
The alarming threat sparked fears of a jihadist terrorist plot as Madrid is considered to be one of the main targets in Spain of jidahist groups with several cells established in the capital.
The mid-air drama saw the pilot of the Aegean Airlines reporting concerns over a passenger whilst flying over the Mediterranean Sea and being told to divert to Mallorca and requested an emergency landing.
According to an official statement from Aegean Airlines issued: “AEGEAN was notified by the Athens International Airport, on Sunday 10th January, for additional security check to a passenger on the scheduled AEGEAN flight A3 688 from Athens to Madrid.
“Considering this information, AEGEAN has instructed the commander of the flight to land on the nearest airport.
“The aircraft has landed on the Palma de Mallorca Airport, where all the additional security checks were conducted for the aircraft and the passengers, as provided by regulations.
“The security checks after the emergency landing revealed no issues and the aircraft departed from Mallorca to its final destination Madrid.”
