Brisbane Underground: Thinking Outside The Square

Published on : Monday, November 18, 2013

ttfThe Newman government’s combined train and bus tunnel will be a world first which will future proof Brisbane’s public transport system, according to peak national industry group, Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said the visionary project shows the government is thinking outside the square to deliver a better outcome for commuters.

“The proposed underground will deliver benefits for all Queenslanders: more train services and inner-city stations for those living in Brisbane and the Gold Coast; reduced bus congestion in the CBD and faster services; and a win for taxpayers who will pay less to deliver the outcomes that both the state and the city council have been seeking to achieve,” Mr Morrison said.

“The project will deliver better services for both residents and workers in the CBD and, importantly, give visitors better access to the Gabba and the proposed new entertainment precinct on George Street.

“Brisbane’s CBD will grow substantially over the next 20 years – if the city is to work efficiently and cope with that growth it is vital we get transport links to and within the CBD right.

“Congestion in Australia’s CBDs is affecting the productivity of the entire economy.

“The two greatest transport constraints facing the Brisbane CBD are rail capacity across the Merivale Bridge and trying to cater for the predicted growth in bus numbers which, if nothing changes, will see more and more buses crammed into the limited space of Brisbane’s surface road network.

“Instead of trying to solve these problems separately, the government’s proposal addresses both of these issues in an innovative project that will attract worldwide interest.

“We congratulate the Premier and his government and Brisbane City Council on their commitment to improving public transport in Brisbane through what will be one of the most important infrastructure projects in the state’s history,” Mr Morrison said.
