British youngster Romany Mitchell, 21, escaped with only a damaged ankle despite plunging 30ft from a balcony in the beach resort of Phuket. She miraculously survived a 30-ft fall from a hotel balcony in Thailand after her drinks were apparently spiked.
Romany suffered only an injured ankle despite plunging from the third-storey of the hotel in Phuket in the early hours. Friends claimed Romany’s drinks had been tampered with during a night out before she returned to her hotel alone and in tears. She was found in the street at 3am by a hotel worker.
A friend said: “It was her first night at the hotel and she had been out with friends but she came back in a taxi alone. She was upset and crying.”She was helped to her room and about 30 or 40 minutes later there was a lot of noise outside, with lots of people gathered round her. It looks like she had fallen from the balcony. Many people were trying to help her. Her ankle was hurt but she was lucky. It could have been far worse.”
Romany, of Edinburgh, had been travelling on a gap year after graduating. She had physiotherapy on her badly-injured ankle at hospital Wednesday. It is understood she will be flown home later this week for treatment at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.Foreign Office chiefs Wednesday renewed warnings to young Brits travelling to Thailand after a spate of falls from balconies.
A spokesman said: “Our message to everyone is to behave responsibly when they are staying somewhere that has a balcony. Though not always the case, alcohol often plays a part in such accidents.”
