Budapest Airport has once again come up with an initiative unique in Europe, as the airport operator organized the first international competition for security controllers and screeners, at Terminal 1. The event was implemented based on an idea conceived by Budapest Airport’s security staff members, who held a similar, in-house competition last year.
The heightened security situation and alert level seen all over Europe during the past days made the I. International Security Controllers Competition organized by Budapest Airport especially topical. Following a similar in-house competition last year, this time around, numerous security professionals from other countries also traveled to Budapest to showcase their expertise in safeguarding aviation security. Teams of three from Frankfurt, Hannover, Prague, Ljubljana, Tirana and of course Budapest Airport competed as part of the event.
The competition consisted of three stages. First, contestants were shown 100 images from the baggage screening system, and had to pick out the 20 which contained items that are prohibited or dangerous to aviation security. The teams then had to answer theoretical questions, before going on to solve so-called situation tasks in the afternoon, whereby they were given 5 minutes to find prohibited items concealed in passengers’ clothing and baggage. The tasks to be completed were set and supervised by the security experts of Budapest Airport, as well as staff from the Aviation Security Department of the Airport Police Directorate.
“We are very proud that our employees’ initiative has grown into a serious international competition, which will further enhance the security of airports and aviation,” said Johan Merten, security director for Budapest Airport. He added: “All participating airports sent their best security professionals to Budapest, thus strengthening the message to passengers and airlines that they can count on the highest possible level of security in Europe. We sincerely hope that with today’s competition, we have launched a series of professional competitions among European airports.”
