According to a survey by Tourism Malaysia in 2015 highlighted that Bukit Bintang was one of the most preferred shopping areas for international tourists. Nowadays, Bukit Bintang has become kind of a shopping magnet particularly for the visitors from China and Middle East.
Last year, around 2.12 million Chinese visitors and almost 300,000 Middle East tourists had visited Malaysia. Many of them visited Bukit Bintang, as well.
The attractions at Bukit Bintang are considered to have added a major boost in making Kuala Lumpur the 10th most visited world city in 2016, in rankings by Euromonitor International.
Last month in a statement, the tourism and culture ministry explained this and said that it was because of the achievement of its constant efforts to endorse Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur as the top tourist destinations in the world.
The ministry stated that the choice to make Jalan Bukit Bintang and its adjoining areas a contemporary shopping centre at par with other world famous shopping areas like the Oxford Street in London, Shinjuku,Tokyo and Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, had caused dramatic growth in tourist arrival number.
As per a report in the Straits Times, foot traffic in the Bukiit Bintang area alone reaches 2.5 million visitors every month.
