Burnie’s Ship Has Come In: Leading Cruises In Town

Published on : Monday, December 7, 2015

tourism tasmania logoFor the first time one of the leading cruise-lines in the Asia Pacific region will be docking in Tasmania, and they’ve selected Burnie as their destination of choice.

This is a major coup for Burnie and the North West region, with more than 1,000 passengers disembarking from the Superstar Virgo today to explore all that the region has to offer.

The arrival of the Superstar Virgo is a welcome addition to the cruise ship season, which kicked off with the arrival of the Dawn Princess in October.

This season Burnie will welcome 11 cruise ships, which is a massive boon for the city and its surrounds.

Last season more than 18,000 cruise ship passengers docked in the city, injecting more than $3.4 million into the economy. A similar economic boost is expected this year.

The addition of the fixed mooring dolphin will help to increase this by enabling access for almost all cruise ships operating in Australian waters.

As recently announced, TasPorts is investing $1.5 million in the infrastructure that allows ships up to 315 metres to dock, rather than the current limit of 285 metres, with installation to start mid-2016.

This will unlock huge potential with nine ships calling into Hobart this season that are between 285 metres and 315m, capable of carrying 23,000 passengers.

Across the state we are expecting 64 cruise ships this season, and the next season bookings indicated a jump to 82 arrivals, a 32 per cent jump, representing a huge tourism growth market.

We are committed to growing this sector through the recently released five year air and sea access strategy, Access 2020.

This will help us to grow the record number of visitors coming to our state, which will help to achieve our target or attracting 1.5 million visitors to our state every year by 2020.
