A new non-stop air route between Calgary and China has become a major step taken in the last five years. This new route is expected to bring 37,000 Chinese travelers to Alberta in the first year, and generate $75 million annually for the local tourism industry.
The new international terminal in Calgary airport will be opened on October 31st. Airport officials believe that the $2-billion, two-million-square-foot terminal will pave the way for more international airlines and services. Besides China, Calgary airport aims to connect points with Seoul and Hong Kong and spread its wings to Europe.
Calgary already has many non-stop flights to various destinations than any other city in Canada. Currently, there are direct flights to 45 US and international destinations from Calgary. The demand for more international links continues to grow as businesses look forward to tap new markets.
The new $2 billion terminal and the $600 million runway are now ready for takeoff. Congestion in passenger areas and lack of available gates will now be resolved with this expanded terminal. Along with direct flights, Calgary airport’s role as a connecting hub also is a positive impact on local tourism. Hence, the airport authorities look forward to capture more connecting flights.
