As the Cambodian government aims to increase the number of Chinese visitors, a business delegation from Kunming in Yunnan province is now in Phnom Penh looking for opportunities in Cambodia’s tourism sector.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the delegation met with Tourism Minister Thong Khon last Thursday in order to discuss possible investment options in the country.
Mr. Khon said, “It’s a wise decision to come and invest in Cambodia because the kingdom has a lot of potential as a tourist destination. We have peace and a favourable investment climate.”
In 2016, Cambodia received 830,000 Chinese visitors and by 2020, the government expects at least two million Chinese tourists. By 2020, the workforce in the country’s tourism industry is expected to reach one million people, according to government plans. In 2017, at least 620,000 jobs were created in the sector.
Ho Vandy, the secretary-general of the Cambodian National Tourism Alliance, said via collaboration between the government and the private sector based on hard work, more investment has been brought into the industry, multiplying the number of services available to tourists, particularly those from China.
