Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said that he expects around 5.5 million tourists this year.
Hun Sen said, “Cambodia has clearly established itself as an attractive destination for cultural and natural tourism.” He expects that there would be seven million tourist arrivals by 2020, which would fetch $5.5 billion to the country’s economy and create 800,000 jobs.
Although Cambodia has its beautiful beaches and Angkor temples, it had an ill reputation for war, genocide and violent political instability.
But of late, it has become a desired choice with backpackers and budget travelers and has started to establish itself as a luxury destination. Foreign tourist arrivals increased 11.9 percent in the first quarter of 2017, according to figures from the Tourism Ministry.
Among them, Chinese tourists accounted for the biggest group of visitors in the first quarter.
