The Ismailia’s annual camel race started on March 21-22nd this year and lured more enthusiasts from 13 Arabian countries. Besides, France, Germany, Austria and Italy had also participated in the event. A convoy of cars sped alongside the camels. A variety of races starting right from 3 to 15 kilometers (1.8 to 9 miles), as well as three laps along a 5-kilometer (3-mile) circuit was all part of the race. Amin Sharaawy, general coordinator of the International Camel Racing Festival believes that the race has earned an international standard with attendees across the globe.
To quote Sharaawy, ‘There is also ongoing coordination with a large number of countries to expand the international participation in the festival in the coming years.’ The race’s financial prizes amounted to a meager 100,000 Egyptian pounds (around $5,500). In addition, evening functions organized by a number of poets from Jordan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia were other attractions. The camel racing 2017 event will gain more impetus on international front and attract additional enthusiasts worldwide is what the organizers believe in.
