The new non-stop flight services between Canada and China which was introduced a year back have become quite popular showing positive results with huge rise in arrivals. Millennial constitute a major part in the sway as they are more independent, allowing to reshape the tourism beyond Vancouver and Toronto.
Direct carriers like the Hainan Airlines’ having thrice-weekly Beijing-Calgary flight services introduced in June last year and Air China’s thrice-weekly Beijing-Montreal service which started in September 2015 acted as major boosters for central and eastern Canada to attract a fair share of Chinese travelers.
Derek Galpin, managing director of destination Canada believes that the millennials are the main driving force. There are approximately 250 million of them present in China.
For instance, Calgary being hotspot with iconic places like Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies, Alberta profits a lot from the Beijing-Calgary service.
Karen Soyka, vice president-business development of Travel Alberta explains that the flights generate an average load factor of 80 percent. At present, China is Alberta’s principal and rapid-growing Asian markets with over 85,000 arrivals recorded in the year 2015 with rise in millennial travelers, she says.
The year 2016 witnessed record high 610,000 Chinese arrivals to Canada, an annual growth of 24 percent, establishing China the third-largest market in terms of arrivals after the UK and the U.S., and the second-largest in terms of spending after the U.S.
