Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IGP) said the quake struck at 03:38 local time (08:38 GMT) and had an intensity of II and III on the Modified Mercalli scale.
IGP said the tremor’s epicentre was located at 29 kilometres (18 miles) northwest of the district of Pozuzo, at a depth of 17 kilometers (10.5 miles).
According to Civil Defence authorities, there have been no reports of damage or injury so far from the quake.
Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 per cent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
