Singapore Changi Airport is stepping up its green efforts in saving Gaia. Changi Airport Group (CAG) today organised its first-ever Airport-Wide Recycling Day for the aviation community to partake and play their part in recycling office waste. As part of its recycling programme, CAG is also partnering a local lamp recycling company on the recycling of used lamps, including the specialised recycling of mercury – a toxic metal in fluorescent lamps – to prevent the emission of the hazardous waste into the environment.
Airport-Wide Recycling Day
To champion the green cause, CAG is rallying the support of the airport community.
More than 20 organisations, including government agencies, airlines, ground handling agents and security agencies, are taking part in this inaugural airport-wide multi-agency effort. This is the first time CAG has roped in airport partners on such a large scale, with a goal of collecting 1,000 kg of recyclable waste in this inaugural effort.
Apart from the usual office recyclable materials such as paper, plastics and metal cans, airport partners have been encouraged to bring along unwanted electronic waste, or e-waste to the main collection points located in each of Changi Airport’s three terminals. E-waste includes unwanted office IT appliances such as photocopy machines, computers, printers and external hard drives, as well as also other household appliances such as refrigerators and microwave ovens. With the prevalent use of electronic gadgets and devices across the airport, e-waste contributes towards a large proportion of all waste generated by the airport community.
Ms Ng Bee Kay, CAG’s Assistant Vice President for Corporate Development & International Relations, said: “Changi Airport Group is cognisant of the impact of its
operations on the immediate environment. Today is an exciting start to an even
bigger sustainability road map. With a combined workforce of 32,000 across 200
companies, the airport community is the perfect hinterland that can immediately
make a powerful impact on environmental sustainability. We have started to engage our partners, such as SATS and SIA Engineering Company, to understand their green policies. We have also discussed environmental action plans and how we can jointly embark on initiatives in the future. We remain hopeful that more partners will join us in our green journey together.”

The Airport-Wide Recycling Day is an excellent platform to create awareness of recycling among airport users. Singapore Airlines supports this green initiative which is consistent with the industry’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection.”
Preventing mercury emissions to environment
CAG is also collaborating with a local lamp recycler – Global Lamp Recyclers – to recycle used fluorescent lamps, including the safe and specialised recycling of mercury. The metal, although a pollutant harmful to the environment, is an essential lighting component in fluorescent lamps.
In the first nine months of this year, CAG has replaced about 34,000 lamps at Changi Airport and sent the used lamps for recycling. These used lamps are collected from the airport and brought to the lamp processing plant. The recycling process involves various stages to crush, separate and recycle the various material parts such as the glass tubings, metals and plastics. The mercury is specially filtered from the other materials during the process.
In all, Changi Airport has close to 200,000 light fittings across its three terminals. To ensure that key areas in the terminals such as the Departure and Arrival Halls, and the Departure/ Transit Lounges are well-lit for the comfort of passengers and visitors, the fluorescent lamps are replaced once every one to two years. The group relamping process, in which a set of lamps are replaced at a scheduled time, are carried out progressively in the different areas in the terminals.
Over the years, CAG’s green efforts have bore fruit amongst the local and international community, with several green awards and accreditation, such as the ACI Asia-Pacific 2012 Green Airports Recognition (Platinum) Award and Best Green Service Provider at the Annual Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards in 2012.
