JFKThe extreme weather in the city resulted in travel from New York’s JFK airport to disrupt for the fifth day.

A pipe burst compounded the issue flooding the arrivals in area of Terminal 4 with three inches of water. Terminal 4 serves 30 international airlines.

The water spilled onto the road outside and froze. For more than four hours the incident shut down arrivals and Customs and Border Patrols.

It was reported that electricity to the entire terminal was switched off to prevent short circuiting the building. It further added to more flights being delays and increasing numbers of passengers being stuck at the airport.

The airport tweeted on January 7  “Due to a water main break at JFK Terminal 4 there are flight delays. Please check with your airline prior to coming to the airport.”

Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which manages the airport, said that he will thoroughly investigate on the pipe burst , why it was not adequately protected and  the contingency plan for this event.

The closing of the arrivals area for several hours was totally unacceptable by him.

He further mentioned that it is not what the Port Authority expects in terms of providing service to its passengers, and it is totally not what the Port Authority expects from its private operators.

The passengers were allowed extra time and asked to contact their airline the airport issued an alert after the problem was fixed.

Heavy snow, ice and harsh winds in the area led to all flights being suspended at various points on 4 and 5 January, with many passengers stranded in the city for several days.

Due to snow and heavy winds JFK witnessed travel disruption over the last week.

Currently 27 of the 40 scheduled departing flights between 12am and 5.59 am was delayed although the situation improved.

Around 38 flights with scheduled departure  between 6am and 11.59am was delayed, and a further nine flights were cancelled.
