Vivanta by Taj-Fisherman’s Cove has been the preferred beachside getaway destination for influencers, opinion makers and globetrotters yearning for tranquility. It is no wonder that Chess czar Magnus Carlsen, who is in the city to participate in the World Chess Championship, chose to stay at Vivanta by Taj-Fisherman’s Cove, Chennai. The hotel has been enthusiastically preparing for Carlsen’s visit.
The hotel accorded a resplendent traditional welcome for Carlsen at the hotel lobby where he was met by Boriah Kumar, General Manager, Vivanta by Taj-Fisherman’s Cove. The ceremonious welcome included the traditional shell garlands, cold towels and a special fusion welcome drink made of fresh cucumber and mint. The guest was then taken in a buggy to his room – the most comfortable and stylish Premium Indulgence Sea Facing Cottage that offers breathtaking views of the beach and beyond. Set amidst lush manicured landscaping and isolated from the bustling city cacophony, the only sounds you hear is the gentle buzz of the sea breeze in these cottages.

The culinary experiences at the Vivanta by Taj-Fisherman’s Cove are heightened by scenic views, intuitive yet unobtrusive service and excellent local fare. Dining by the sea at the seafood specialty restaurant Bayview is an experience in itself. Here, the orchestrated harmony of the sea breeze juxtaposed with the crashing waves on the coastline lends a perfect backdrop to a memorable meal. Our Chef is eager to wow you with specialties at the authentic Mediterranean restaurant, Upper Deck, where every meal is specially-handcrafted and served with passion. Dining in the candle-lit alfresco cabanas with the sea in the backdrop is extremely therapeutic to the eyes and the mind. Anchor Bar serves a variety of cocktails amidst a charming English ambience, while the sunken Sunburst Bar at the poolside is a great place to spend a lazy afternoon, lounging in the pool.
During his stay at the hotel, Carlsen was served specially curated meals from the all-day diner Seagull and the Mediterranean specialty cuisine restaurant – Upper Deck. Chef-in-charge Ganeshkumar Murthy, who has been personally preparing all his meals, ensured that the food was medium spicy as per Carlsen’s preference. He particularly relished spaghetti aglio oligio with bacon, whole wheat croissants and the cheese omelette with green chillies, while indulging in fresh mango juice through his stay.
Carlsen spent most of his time relaxing by the poolside, enjoying a game of volleyball on the beach as well as tennis and badminton.
Complimenting the Hotel team for their spirited hospitality, Carlsen signed off with a promise to return to Vivanta by Taj–Fisherman’s Cove between each of his matches to unwind amidst the sun, sand and the sea.
