According to the media reports the majority of the plans are focused on the redevelopment of one of the airport’s domestic terminals into a central terminal, including the expansion of passenger screening and concession areas.
The up gradation includes up to nine additional gates in the airport’s international airport, which hasn’t been expanded since it opened 23 years ago. The taxpayers won’t fund the projects, said Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel. The planning process is expected to be finished next year. The cost of this phase will be an estimated $300 million, and would be raised through the sale of bonds backed by passenger facility charges.
American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said in a statement, that, over the next 18 months, before the expiration of their current lease, American Airlines will continue to work with the city of Chicago to propel the customer experience at O’Hare into the future.
According to Airports Council International, O’Hare was the fourth-busiest airport in the world last year based on passenger traffic.
$4.4 billion has already been spent on new runways and other upgrades under an ongoing improvement and expansion project at the Chicago Airport. Another $1.3 billion had been announced in airfield projects, earlier this year.
