In the report, first published by Khmer Times, the ministry explained that tourist arrivals grew by almost 11.2 %.
Following the trend of the visitor in neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand, China continues to be the top source market with 1.2 million visits in the first six months, showing a 38% rise. Over a third of all arrivals poured from China. Other strong markets included Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand.
Two significant source markets, Korea and the US, decreased a trend that tourism officials explained as troublesome.
For Cambodia, South Korea is considered to be a top market, prompting travel executives to question the reason why the market has experienced a 20.2% drop in the first six months.
As per the ministry, Siem Reap witnessed a drop, January to June, of 8% with arrivals reaching 1.2 million.
Phnom Penh and the coastal area of Sihanoukville by contrast registered a growth of 27% to reach 2 million.
In 2020, Cambodia should attract 7 million foreign tourists, generating USD4.3 billion in tourism receipts.
