Lin Songtian, the new Chinese ambassador to South Africa on Thursday declared that security assistance is as one of the ten significant sectors areas that require increased cooperation from both the countries.
Lin was talking about this on his first official day as ambassador. He had just completed three years as the head of the Africa department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He gave his testimonials to President Jacob Zuma later in the day.
“Peace and security is the fundamental precondition for national development and investment cooperation,” he said. “We stand ready to support South Africa to enhance the capacity of law enforcement authorities, build smart cities and develop a safe South Africa.”
Lin also said that only 110,000 Chinese tourists had visited South Africa in 2016. It’s an insignificant fraction of the 122 million Chinese visitors who visited the world, spending up to US$109, 8 billion overseas.
China has huge potential in terms of increased tourism. However, many tourists and possible investors had taken steps aback by the insight of high crime. Lin partially held media responsible for making this perception. Nevertheless, he also acknowledged, totally, that there remained an objective issue related to crime when he provided China’s support to local law enforcement authorities.
