Tourism in China saw profitable times during the three-day Qingming holidays, with the “red tourism” sites commemorating the country’s revolutionary heroes attracting bigger crowds of Chinese citizens.
During the holiday, China’s tourism sector recorded revenue of 47.89 billion Yuan ($7.13 billion), going up 13.7 percent year-on-year.
Online ticket bookings for red tourism (traditional revolutionary sites) registered year-on-year growth of 55.2 percent, as per the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The Qingming holidays sttracted not only visitors seeking leisure, but also lots of “tomb sweepers” living outside of Hunan who returned to the province to commemorate their ancestors.
Besides recognizing China’s revolutionary leaders, citizens paid their respects to the country’s fallen soldiers and heroes during the holiday. A total of 27 young firefighters died in a recent wild fire that broke out in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. Hence, local residents organized memorial services outside of mourning halls and netizens launched online memorial activities to pay their respects.
