China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) announced at the press conference that the 1st World Tourism Development Conference will kick off in Beijing on May 18. Initiated and organized by China, this conference is co-hosted by the Chinese government and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). State leaders of China and other countries will attend the opening ceremony and deliver addresses, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will send a congratulatory message. The conference, themed “promoting world peace and development via tourism”, will bring together nearly 1,000 participants from 107 countries, including 600 foreign delegates and persons from central ministries and commissions, provinces and municipalities of China, tourism research institutes, large tourism enterprises and media organizations at home and abroad, to discuss the development of the global tourism industry.
At the press conference, Li Shihong, CNTA Vice Chairman, Zhang Lizhong, Director of CNTA Department of Tourism Promotion and International Liaison, and Yu Debin, Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development briefed the media on the 1st World Tourism Development Conference.
The conference features three highlights. First, it was initiated by China and attracts active participation from around the world. There will be nearly 600 foreign delegates from 107 countries around the globe. Second, it is a high-level conference that attracts great importance from governments of all relevant countries and regions. State leaders of China and other countries will attend the opening ceremony and deliver addresses, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will send a congratulatory letter. There will be nearly 70 foreign distinguished guests above vice-ministerial level and 29 ambassadors to China. More than 40 domestic leaders from central ministries and commissions, party secretaries
of Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunnan, along with leaders from other provinces and municipalities, will attend the conference. Third, the conference has a distinctive theme that has a strong resonance. The theme “promoting world peace and development via tourism” reflects the growing role of the global tourism industry in boosting economic and social development and maintaining world peace.
Foreign distinguished guests to be present at the conference include high-ranking government officials such as Masoud Soltanifar, Vice President of Iran and head of Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization, Xavier Luc Duval, Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius and Minister of Tourism & External Communications, Joe Natuman, Vanuatu’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, President of Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, as well as tourism officials from China’s tourism partners including Britain, the US, Russia, France, Germany, Italy and South Africa, neighbouring countries like South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and Burma, South Pacific countries and other African countries.
The conference will feature such activities as the tourism promotion evening, opening ceremony, keynote speeches, summit, and meeting for tourism ministers from 20 countries. During the period of the conference, Beijing will held the International Tourism Expo, provinces including Shanxi, Hunan and Guizhou will conduct tourism promotion activities, and Shandong and Henan will invite some distinguished guests to visit their province. In addition, the UN will officially announce at the conference to launch the 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, a resolution it adopted in September, 2015. The Beijing Declaration on Tourism for Development will also be released at the conference.
