Several alcohol stores of London have informed that whisky enthusiasts from China spend five figures to indulge in single malts, several times in a single week.
It has been found that the Chinese tourists take extraordinary measures to acquire the finest whisky during their stay.
One of the shop owners of central London has informed that a buyer has become very frustrated to know that the store only kept three bottles of 30-year-old Macallan Blue Label at that time. It has also been known that the traveller also asked the owner, whether he could send his driver later to the distillery to pick up some more or not.
According to study, it is cheaper to travel to UK to buy whisky than to import it. At present, Hong Kong charges 100% on any kind of imported spirit. But the country does not charge if someone brings the bottles after a trip to UK. It is easier for the travellers to get a flight, buy spirits and come back to the country than buying the imported ones from the local spirit shops.
On October, the Scotch Whisky Association has urged UK to give priority to negotiating free trade deals with China after Brexit as the country has the highest number of billionaires.
One of the sales associates of a whisky store in London has informed that this is a really common occurrence. She has also added that some of the customers have a good understanding of whisky and one can tell when the tourists are in the market for something they will enjoy. On the other hand, some of those Chinese tourists have an ‘expensive is better’ mentality.
