queenslandQueensland tourism destinations are on show this week with more than 200 leading Chinese travel agents visiting the Whitsundays.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said the trade event, Corroboree Greater China, was a great opportunity for Queensland tourism businesses to showcase their products to the Chinese market.

“Greater China, including mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, is a significant market for Queensland’s tourism industry,” Ms Jones said.

“It is also the State’s largest international market by visitor expenditure with visitors spending $875 million in Queensland in the year to September 2014.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to growing inbound travel from Asia and in particular, China.”

Ms Jones said Corroboree Greater China was run by Tourism Australia and supported by Tourism and Events Queensland.

“It provides an opportunity for Queensland businesses to showcase their products directly with Chinese travel agents who specialise in selling Australian destinations,” she said.

“This event follows a landmark agreement signed last week with Jetstar and Hubei Wanda New Airline International Travel Services Co. Ltd to establish new direct flights between China and the Gold Coast.

“This trade event will boost travel to Queensland supporting local businesses and jobs growth.

“Held in one of Queensland’s most spectacular destinations – the Whitsundays – delegates will experience first-hand why Queensland is where Australia shines.”

Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL) Executive Director Jeff Aquilina said Corroboree would provide an immediate boost for local tourism businesses.

“Delegates will be spoilt for choice when exploring the Whitsundays, with a host of exceptional tourism experiences including 74 island wonders, the Great Barrier Reef, and stunning rainforests,” Mr Aquilina said.

The 2015 Corroboree Greater China is the second consecutive year the event has been held in Queensland following a successful inaugural event on the Gold Coast in 2014.

Corroboree Greater China runs from 12-15 May 2015 on Hamilton Island and involves a three-day workshop, followed by a day exploring the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsundays tourism attractions.

Corroboree Greater China is hosted by Tourism Australia in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland, Whitsunday’s Marketing and Development Ltd and Hamilton Island.
