For the last few days, the tourism companies of Chitwan is going through massive slump in business because of the devastating landslide which struck Narayanghat-Mugling highway last week and it carries on posing problem to the visitors.
If we take a look, we find that popular tourist destinations like Shaura, Meghauli, Patihani and Kashara are almost vacant.
More and more visitors have already called of their Chitwan tour plan and are visiting other tourist hotspots like Pokhara and Bandipur in its place. This situation has made many hoteliers quite worried on the issue as bookings are being annulled at an alarming rate.
To quote Shyam Kaji Mahat, operator of Hotel Central Park situated at Shaura, “Our business is seriously affected by the condition of the road. As the road to Chitwan was not safe we asked the tourists to return back from Mugling.”
As per Mahat, there had been a relentless landslide at the Narayanghat-Mugling highway a week back as a result of which visitors on the way to Chitwan got caught up in the consequences. To quote Mahat, “They were stuck in an ardous jam for more than 7 hours without food and water. Since the landslide was not cleared, they diverted to Pokhara. Around 60 Indian tourists left for Pokhara as an alternative.”
Mahat’s hotel has more than 46 rooms. However, all of them are empty at this moment. “Generally, during this period, Indian, Chinese and domestic tourists visit Shaura,” said Mahat.
To note, Mahat is not the only person undergoing this problem. Over 100 hoteliers of Shaura are going through similar issue. The industry which had the employed more than 2000 people is now on the threshold of getting crumple. “Although, this is not a major season for tourist inflow, we used to have 25 to 50 percent occupancy in previous years,” said Suman Ghimire, president of Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) Chitwan Chapter.
