Chongyang Festival or Double Ninth FestivalSunday, i.e. November 3rd, marks the Chongyang Festival or Double Ninth Festival, which is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

The elderly Chinese celebrate the festival by climbing mountains, drinking chrysanthemum wine and sweeping the tombs of their ancestors. This is the first year that China will celebrate the festival as the Elders’ Day. It comes after China implemented the law to protect the interest of the elderly in July, and stipulated the day also as the Elders Day.

According to official statistics, China’s ageing population has entered a period of rapid growth.

As of the end of 2012, China had a population of over 190 million over the age of 60. That number is expected to reach more than 240 million in 2020 and 300 million by 2025.
