CNN highlights flight attendant medical emergency training

CNNscreenshot1What happens on the ground can happen in the air—especially as it relates to in-flight medical situations—a fact not lost on Delta’s more than 22,000 flight attendants who are rigorously trained to respond when customers need medical assistance.

That intense training and emphasis on providing Delta customers a high level of care during an unforeseen in-flight medical event was profiled on CNN where Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta went behind-the-scenes with the airline’s In-Flight instructors to learn just how flight attendants prepare.

Medical emergency training, where flight attendants are taught to recognize and respond to customers needing medical assistance, is part of Delta’s seven week intensive new hire training program and is also emphasized in annual recurrent training. In fact, scenarios are designed to reflect actual in-flight events that the airline’s flight attendants have experienced.

While flight attendants are the first responders on board, medical emergencies in-flight is a team effort bringing together the support of flight deck crews, dispatchers in Delta’s Operations and Customer Center and the medical expertise of STAT-MD, an organization based at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center that provides ground-based support for Delta to make appropriate decisions on how best to respond to an event, including diverting the flight in the most serious of cases.
