In the New Year, Penang’s tourism industry received a great boost when it was named one of the 17 best places to visit in 2017 by CNN. Penang was named after Prince Edward Island, Canada. Penang is only one of three locations in Asia on the list, which includes destinations in Thailand and China.
The list was made after consultation with CNN experts from all over the world about their favorite places. The Pearl of the Orient was voted for its cuisine, among other factors, and acknowledged as having one of Asia’s best street foods.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng welcomed the results and expressed his thanks to Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz for promoting Penang to the world and promised more tourism-related projects for boosting the tourism industry and attracting more visitors to the state. He said, “Penangites don’t need to go anywhere else, now that we are recognized as one of the 17 best places to visit.”
