Tour portals like Lonely planet, Tripadvisor and others give travelers information and alert against various scams via forums and sections. One of the common practices here involves travel agencies or taxi drivers that incentivize customers to shop at retail outlets like handicraft or jewelry emporiums for a cheap transportation fare.
Although tourists agree to this, it eventually becomes a waste of time and the driver ends up getting more commission. The shopping experience is also rated poorly due to insistent sales staff and customers often getting cheated due to overpriced goods.
While we might sympathize with many such foreign travelers getting duped in many such cases, China has actually started a systematic crackdown on such disreputable tourism practices. China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) has announced its half-year-long plan action plan to crackdown on unreasonably low-cost tour packages. Although domestic tourism is expected to take a hit, market trends say that in the long term, this would increase quality of tours and better service with better shopping environments.
