Tropical destinations are a hot choice as corals attracts travelers in spite of occupying only 0.1% of the earth’s surface. Recently as per a modern research, 70 million trips are happening worldwide because of coral reefs in a year emphasizing that coral reef is one of the driving forces for tourism.
Side by side, another study revealed in Spadling et al points out that coral reefs stand for an amazing $36 billion economic value to the world annually out of which $36 billion and $19 billion symbolize actual “on-reef” tourism which includes diving, snorkeling, glass-bottom boating and wildlife watching. The spillover effects of coral reefs contribute another $16 billion which include world class seafood, exotic white sandy beaches along with crystal clear waters, charter fishing, bareboat sailing, cruise shipping, helicopter and seaplane rides, water sports, whale watching, etc.
Sadly, there is a gloomy side to it as well in terms of increased tourism activities. Some of the important issues like crack in coral colonies and tissue damage caused from direct contact in activities like walking, touching, kicking, standing, or gear contact are the negative effects. Breakage is caused by Boat anchors also. Furthermore, alterations in marine life behavior from feeding or harassment by humans are few other concerns to look at.
