visit cornwallNow in their 12th year, the prestigious Awards hosted by Visit Cornwall, the Cornwall Development Company tourism service, and sponsored by St Austell Brewery, cover over 19 categories and shine the spotlight on leading tourism businesses who represent the very best the county has to offer visitors.

Geevor Tin Mine in West Cornwall led the celebrations by claiming the coveted Winner of Winners title as well as Gold in the newly introduced Art, Museum & Maritime Attraction category. The attraction was singled out for its evocative and interactive Cornish mining exhibitions and tours, and applauded for its value for money.

Other notable winners included the Bodmin Visitor Information Centre who held onto their Tourist Information Service of the Year award for the fifth consecutive year by sharing gold with their Fal River counterparts, and Pentillie Castle who added best B&B in Cornwall to their national Visit England Awards for Excellence 2012 title.

A number of multiple winners were also revealed including The Headland Hotel, who as well as playing host to the night, picked up two Gold trophies alongside the Eden Project. Heartlands in Pool meanwhile highlighted the diversity of its offer by claiming a total of four awards across a range of categories.

Malcolm Bell, Head of Visit Cornwall, was at the ceremony to congratulate the winners: “The trophies won in the Cornwall Tourism Awards represent a tremendous amount of work and are a true reflection of the businesses winning them. Rather than being awarded on a first, second and third point scoring basis they are the combination of a number of factors and directly relate to the quality of the individual business – that’s why, in a number of the categories, we have multiple Gold, Silver, Bronze or Commended winners. They should all be immensely proud and I congratulate each and every one of them.”

Councillor Julian German, Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture, adds: “The Cornwall Tourism Awards are a chance to celebrate the continuous hard-work, investment and passion that goes into the Cornish tourism industry and to shine the light on the businesses that make it all happen. I hope that the Award titles drive the winners forward to an even more successful future and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”

James Staughton, Managing Director of title sponsors St Austell Brewery commented: “The winner’s roll shows a diverse range of businesses united by quality and excellence. It is an honour to be part of such a market-leading industry and I am proud to help give these businesses the recognition that they deserve.”

In the foodie categories The Pandora Inn was named Pub of the Year for the third time whilst the top restaurant accolade was collected by The Herring at the Bedruthan Steps Hotel. Entrants from the Isles of Scilly also fared well with the Hell Bay Hotel and Juliet’s Garden picking up Gold trophies for Small Hotel and Café & Tearoom respectively.

The Cornwall Tourism Awards also give special recognition to those that make a personal difference to the visitor experience and this year the Outstanding Customer Service Award went to a surprised Christine Hornsby of Perran Sands Holiday Park for her dedication and enthusiasm. The RNLI and Surf Lifesaving Lifeguards of Cornwall were also honoured for their vital services on Cornish beaches by being awarded Outstanding Contribution to Tourism.

A total of 60 trophies handcrafted in Cornwall by Jo Downs, were awarded on the night in front of 300 people from the tourism industry. Entertainment was provided by the Miracle Theatre, Kernow King and compere, Daphne Skinnard from BBC Radio Cornwall.
