Miravalles Volcano National Park-Jorge Manuel Dengo has been declared as Costa Rica’s the 29th national park.
The hidden gem is located in the north-western region of Guanacast which is nearly 5,000 hectares and features the region’s biggest geothermal fields.
More than any other country in the world Costa Rica’s protected areas encompass more a quarter of its land mass.
Previously the new park was called the called Miravalles Volcano Protected Area and environmentalist Jorge Manuel Dengo Obregón named it. He is one of the country’s greatest environmentalist and big player in the creation of national parks in Costa Rica.
Jorge Manuel Dengo was the founder of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, vice-president of Costa Rica foreign trade minister (1982-1986) and an expert in natural disasters.
Considering the area’s biophysical features , natural resources and potential for environmental research research and education the name change from protected area to national park.
Among the species found here are the Jaguars, big cats, ocelots, cougars and tapirs . Their sights are dominated by Miravalles Volcano which stands at Standing at 6,654 feet. It is the tallest volcano in the Guanacaste mountain range and generates an abundance of geothermal energy.
Thermal hot springs are one of the most popular attractions in the area of the park.Thirty miles away from Liberia International Airport is Guanacaste which is one of Costa Rica’s most popular regions.
The regions presents a diverse geography and has many popular beaches, it is positioned in the north-western corner of the country and is known to have a tropical yet dry climate.
