Cruise ship tourism gains popularity in New Zealand South

cruise ship tourismThe cruise ship industry is the fastest-growing tourism sector in New Zealand and Southland needs to take advantage of this growing industry to develop its economy.

Warrick Low, Venture Southland tourism and events manager spoke about the growth of the cruise ship sector in Southland. Cruise ship tourism is growing exponentially and there is opportunity for Southland businesses to reap the benefits of cruise ship travelers.

Cruise is the fastest-growing sector in tourism. In 2016, cruise ships brought in $8 million to Southland’s economy, and Venture Southland expects that the numbers would go up this year. People who opt for cruise tourism are mostly baby boomers, rich and well-traveled.

In the current world scenario, New Zealand is probably seen as a “rather safe” destination. If cruise ship tourism needs to become more regular, then Venture would be looking to places such as Port Chalmers in Dunedin which had developed a seaport.
