Culion Island stigma as Leper Island prevents tourist visitation

Culion IslandCulion Island in the Philippines is a beautiful speck of white sand encircled by the azure sea but despite its unbeatable natural beauty, it has become extremely difficult to sell the island to tourists for the local tour operators. The island, known as a leper island is where in earlier days people suffering from leprosy were sent in isolation to live in this island to die.

The destination faces a lot of challenges to attract tourism and tour operators have been looking for help from the government. But the stigma that is attached to this island makes it difficult for tour operators to change the mindset of tourists.

The island has few hotels as it attracts just a few unconventional tourists who may put up in Hotel Maya one of the finest properties of the island. The natural beauty is uncontested and tall daring cliffs offer 360 degree view of the sea.

It is only recently that the island received 24-hour electricity. The neighbouring islands amount to greater interest. But recently some tourists have been more daring and a desire to discover the pristine, unexplored beaches have attracted 300 people to the Hotel Maya which only brought 80 tourists to the island on a monthly basis.

The greatest pull to the island is its history. Pett A Rosello, Culion Tourism Office for Operations claims that the natural beauty has been well preserved and the island is known as the “last frontier of Palawan in terms of natural resources.” There are endeavors being taken to convert this island to a leisure destination.
