Cyclone Gita to smash New Zealand, travel warning issued

gitaCyclone Gita, a category 5 tropical storm is due to hit the south island tomorrow morning and cause huge travel disruption in New Zealand.

 

Tonga and Samoa had already suffered damage and the MetService warned it is expected to bring a period of high-impact severe weather to many parts of central New Zealand.

 

 

As per the latest reports Cyclone Gita is expected to cause huge travel disruptions.

 

 

The MetService warning read as – “Heavy rain will cause slips, rapidly rising streams and rivers, and flooding. Severe gales with damaging gusts are expected, so people are advised to secure property and items that may be blown away by strong winds.”

 

 

In just 24 hours, Parts of the West Coast, as well as Nelson and Wellington, could be hit with as much as 100 millimetres of rainfall.

 

British travellers who are flying in and out of the country might be affected by the travel disruptions.

 

 

Air New Zealand travel alert on their website stated that they were anticipating significant disruption to their domestic network as well as some international services over the coming week.

 

 

The passengers were also warned by the airline that they would not be reimbursed for additional costs in case of a disruption such as hotels or meals.

 

 

They stated that any customer who chooses to commence their journey as planned must be advised that they do so at their own risk.

 

 

Till now the flights with the airline were not affected or cancelled.

 

 

Singapore Airlines connecting to Auckland and Christchurch were “closely monitoring the situation” but till now  no flights were cancelled.

 

 

The Civil Defence has advised people in Marlborough to stock up on supplies and the citizens were urged to prepare for the worst.

 

 

According to the MetService the storm could hit as early as tonight with winds of over 150kmh.

 

 

Those put up in campers or boats were warned to leave.
