Dara Khosrowshahi has been one of the most reliable executive in online travel and the organisation chose a travel industry veteran instead of other experienced executives like the Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard or Jeffrey Immelt of General Electric.
Khosrowshahi over the past two decades has seen the growth of Expedia and its numerous brands. His experience will further expand Uber as an organization, leading to its global expansion.
A spokesperson from Expedia did not comment on Khosrowshshi taking the Uber job.
Khosrowshahi was seen as surprise pick, Whitman was also leading but Immelt who was also a leading contender had been dropped out.
Khosrowshahi is well experienced in handling obstacles and had earlier helped Expedia build a global technology platform when it was out-executed by rival Booking.com.
Khosrowshahi was with Expedia since 2005, prior to this from 1998 he was the CFO of IAC and CEO of IAC Travel. IAC was Expedia’s parent company at that point of time.
After partnership with Barry Diller, Expedia’s senior executive from 1998, a slew of acquisition were made that included Expedia,Hotels.com, Hotwire, TripAdvisor and many more.
In 2015 Expedia acquired Travelocity, Orbitz, and vacation rental giant HomeAway among other buys.
Expedia is the middle of integrating HomeAway and is trying to get more involved in alternative accommodations, however Khosrowshahi’s sudden departure may pose challenges for the company.
