On Thursday, the whole of Darjeeling district got immersed into disorder as the arsonists set ablaze a famous tourist landmark situated in the heart of Darjeeling town and Kurseong railway station. A convoy of the minister of the state cabinet someway succeeded to avoid those aggressive protesters crying for his blood twice on the consecutive day.
However, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, refuted any responsibility and held outsiders responsible for the practice. They indicated that their leadership may not have any management over huge number of protestors any more. The supporters of the Pro-Gorkhaland set fire to the tourist information office which is located at Darjeeling Mall. After doing that, they did the same in Gayabari railway station in Kurseong followed by a forest bungalow near the Teesta. Soon after that, the agitators targeted state tourism minister Gautam Deb’s convoy.
The tourism centre was overhauled only recently and setting it ablaze came as a massive blow to the tourism industry of Darjeeling, which has already got thousands of tourist bookings in the second half of 2017 go to Sikkim and even Nepal and Bhutan. The locals and travelers considered this center like a window connecting with the outside world. It was also one of the chief money-spinners and a popular meeting point.
“This has sent out a wrong signal. We would get hundreds of tourists converging here every day, enquiring about places to visit in Darjeeling and on its periphery. We would also give out information about Foreign Registration Office and hotels and answer queries on the Hill town’s history,” a senior tourism official said.
