David Leechiu, CEO of the Leechiu Property Consultants believes that China could make a spectacular change to the Philippine tourism overnight. To quote him, ‘“[This is] because we are now ‘BFFs’ [coined term for best friends forever] with China.’ In the last two decades, improved relationship between China and Philippines has been hampered by the sovereign issue which exists over the South China Sea, as describe by the top executive.
In Philippines for the last six years, Chinese tourists have been consistently occupying the position among the top 3 foreign visitors along with South Koreans and the Americans.
According to the statistics of the Department of Tourism (DOT), about 243,000 travelers from China visited the Philippines in 2011, 251,000 in 2012 and 426,000 in 2013.
However, in 2014, the arrivals decreased to 395,000. It has improved yet again in the next couple of years from 491,000 to 676,000.
To quote Leechiu, ‘before, they [Chinese authorities] were preventing people from going to the Philippines [because of] geopolitical issues. [But now], they’re back. That’s why there’s a big jump from 2015 to 2016.’ He said that though the country is getting large number of the Chinese outbound tourists, in comparison to other countries, it’s just a fraction.
