In a dramatic turn of events on New Year’s Day morning, a transatlantic flight bound for Boston faced a mid-air emergency, leading to an evacuation at Shannon Airport. Delta Air Lines Flight DL-113, en route from Rome, Italy, to Boston, declared an emergency over the Atlantic, south of Ireland. The crew reported fumes emanating from one of the aircraft’s galleys.

Around 11:20 am, approximately 230 kilometers south of Ireland, the crew declared a ‘Pan pan’ emergency, signifying urgency but not as severe as a ‘May day.’ Shannon Airport’s emergency response was swiftly activated, involving the airport’s fire and rescue service, National Ambulance Service, Clare County Fire and Rescue Service, and An Garda Síochána.

As the aircraft diverted to Shannon, the flight crew informed air traffic controllers of at least one passenger feeling unwell from the fumes. They announced an overweight landing, exceeding the maximum design weight for the model. The Airbus A330-900 jet safely landed at 11:49 am, met by airport and local authority fire crews.

A thorough inspection of the jet’s undercarriage ensured it hadn’t overheated during the emergency landing. The crew, prioritizing passenger safety, requested the immediate evacuation of all 294 passengers and crew. Mobile stairs were deployed, and with the assistance of fire service personnel and paramedics, passengers were safely escorted off the plane.

Inside the terminal, paramedics assessed passengers, including a young child, who complained of feeling unwell. Thankfully, no one required hospitalization. Engineers are set to investigate the source of the fumes before determining if the aircraft can continue its journey.

This incident highlights the importance of swift emergency response measures and the crew’s commitment to passenger well-being during unexpected situations.
