Denver International Airport Serves Nearly Seventy Million Passengers in 2019

Denver International AirportDenver International Airport (DEN) finished the decade setting more passenger traffic records and marking its sixth consecutive year of growth. In 2019, more than 69 million passengers passed through DEN, a seven percent increase over 2018.

“As DEN prepares to celebrate our 25th birthday later this month, we are reflecting on the past 25 years of growth,” said DEN CEO Kim Day. “When DEN opened, many naysayers said the airport, which was built for 50 million passengers a year, would never reach capacity. Now, 25 years later we have far exceeded our original capacity and are building to accommodate our passenger growth now and in the future with a redesigned terminal and 39 newly built gates. These improvements will allow us to accommodate the growth of our airlines and serve 90 million passengers.”

DEN finished the year with record-breaking months in November and December, marking 27-consecutive months of growth. While November snow storms and cancellations meant DEN saw a less than one percent increase over the year before, passenger traffic was up nearly 11 percent in December 2019 over 2018.

Overall, a total of 69,015,703 passengers traveled through DEN in 2019, compared to the previous record of 64,494,613 in 2018. Records were set almost every day this summer. In fact, 98 days in 2019 were busier than the airport’s busiest in 2018. DEN also made history on July 19 when 227,497 estimated passengers travelled through the airport in a single day.

DEN’s growth was not just limited to domestic flights. International passenger traffic increased by 7.6 percent over 2018, serving an all-time high of nearly 3.2 million passengers. It was the first year that DEN served more than three million international passengers in one year.

During the year, DEN’s airlines served 215 nonstop destinations, including 26 international destinations in 2019. The airport also welcomed Cayman Airways with the inauguration of new nonstop service to Grand Cayman and United added nonstop service to Frankfurt.

Domestically, DEN inaugurated nonstop service during the year to 15 brand-new destinations, securing its spot as one of the largest domestic networks. Furthermore, DEN’s airline partners added 21 additional nonstop routes to existing domestic destinations, providing DEN passengers with more carrier options.

The airport also experienced a spike in mail, freight and cargo operations with nearly 672 million pounds of cargo being transported, a 9.5 percent increase over 2018. This is the highest annual cargo volume that has passed through the Airport since 2005, which had about 683 million pounds of cargo.
