According to the witnesses, it was a chaotic situation. The staff and visitors to M&D’s amusement park in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, rushed towards those who were injured and tried to provide first aid.
Two adults and eight children were being treated at local hospitals as reported by the Lanarkshire Police.
Five gondolas detached from the rails of the “Tsunami” roller coaster, collided with the ride’s main structure, and then got struck in the ground. There were nine passengers on the ride.
The “Tsunami” coaster can travel at a speed of about 40 miles per hour, and children below the age group of 10 are not permitted to ride.
One of the visitors, who had ridden the “Tsunami” coaster only a couple of minutes before the derailment described hearing a crash and screams while waiting for another ride. It was a horrifying experience witnessing so many people trapped in the derailed car after the crash.
An investigation is now underway and the park would be closed until further notice due to a “serious incident.”
