Despite Political Turmoil Australian Tourists Keep Flocking to Thailand

Published on : Monday, December 2, 2013

thailandThis year Bangkok was recognized as the world’s most popular tourist destination in the Global Destination Cities Index, with almost 16 million visitors expected by the end of December.

The most well-liked Thai destination for Australians is the island of Phuket in the south where an average 20,000 Australians holiday each month. Alan Morison, an Australian who runs the Phuketwan news website on Phuket, said that he doesn’t expect the number of Australians tourists to drop off significantly because of the latest turmoil.

In spite of the government declaring on Sunday night that Bangkok residents should stay indoors; an area popular with backpackers one kilometre north of the Grand Palace, was “buzzing” with activity.

Twenty-three countries have issued special travel alerts urging people visiting Thailand to be cautious of the protests.
