A study conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau has estimated that the permanent populace of this region is currently at 13,000 residents. But then, the large number of tourists who flock to this country is capable of swelling the population into tens of thousands.
Zach Jenkins who is the director of the Haas Center at the University of West Florida asserted that that is no entity that can effectively track the appropriate number of people in the city at any given time. Having said that, there are numerous ways to keep a tab on transient population.
He feels that unlike an amusement park where the exact number of visitors entering and leaving can be tracked easily, it is not really possible to calculate the number of tourists arriving here.
But despite this fact, there are a few ways in which the approximate number can be estimated.
He also said that the Tourist Development Councils in other nations would at times conduct surveys of tourists with a view to determine how many of them are in a given area at a certain point of time. By calculating the bed tax revenue, hotel occupancy rates, family size numbers and rental units of Okaloosa County and also by comparing Okaloosa County to Walton County’s most recent tourism survey, Jenkins feels that the peak season Destin has led to an increase of up to 25,000 tourists in the city.
Jenkins added that this does not include day tourists or the people who come all the way from Escambia or Walton nations.
Carisse LeJeune who is the Destin City Manager estimates that during the peak tourist times, it is likely that there would be over 25,000 people inside the city.
Destin Water Users have estimated that based on the water flow, the total number of tourists visiting this part of the world might be close to 60,000.
