The disused Queanbeyan-Bombala rail line becomes a tourism bonanza for the region

The expansion of a recreational trail at the length of the abandoned railway line between Queanbeyan and Bombala would add $4 million every year to the regional economy, as per a recent pre-feasibility study.

The study, developed by TRC Tourism for Monaro Rail Trail Inc, evaluated the case for setting up of a trail for cyclists, walkers as well as runners along the 213kms corridor, concluding that the possible tourism benefits warranted a more comprehensive study.

However, the proposal goes through substantial challenges, including hostility from important landholders all along the route with political clout and a pressure for restoring rail freight line between Canberra and the port of Eden on the South Coast.

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has promised a $1 million research into the new rail proposal, if the Coalition Government is re-nominated, but many are cynical about its prospects.

Few landholders have anxieties about biosecurity, having to amend their farm practices along with stock management, and privacy. But MRT says these anxities are baseless and same problems have been resolved on interstate and overseas trails.

The study explains that the trail would revive the regional towns and villages like Michelago, Cooma, Bredbo and Nimmitabel where local, national and international tourists would get refreshments, food and accommodation.
