The Department of Tourism of the Great Santa Cruz Island is geared toward uplifting and promoting tourism of the region. This initiation in return is helping the locally impoverished communities to benefit from the efforts. To quote the Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon T. Teo, ‘’ Tourism, no matter how profitable it becomes, is irrelevant if it will not help improve the quality of life of the ordinary people’’. Various government agencies related to tourism have collaborated with local units to involve local communities in the said tourism program.
To quote Teo, ‘’ “If we aspire for inclusive growth, then we must encourage inclusive participation at the domestic level. We are so proud about this citation and happy about its very timely announcement, which comes right after our visit in December, when I had pushed for the island’s immediate improvement and development as an ecotourism destination’’. This developmental program helped Great Santa Cruz Island to get a position in the list of the 21 Best Beaches in the World by the international publication named National Geographic. Teo added that she directed Antonio M. Blanco, DOT Region 9 Director to organize with Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) in upgrading island’s beauty.
