UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday expressed gratitude of the leadership, government and people of the UAE to the Arab ambassadors for their supportive stances to the UAE’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 in Dubai under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.
The World Expo is held every five year for a period of six months. However, this edition of the World Expo in Dubai shall stretch from October 2020 to April 2021 (a period of six months stretched in two calendar years). The first World Expo was held in London (1851). The other competing cities are Izmir in Turkey, Ekaterinburg in Russia and Sao Paulo in Brazil.
The winning city was determined through a vote by 168 member countries of the BIE. Dubai, the winning bidder professed a master plan with a site of 438 hectares of land within a close proximity from the international airports.
To support its theme of sustainability, the iconic structure that covers much of the site will have photovoltaic fabric that is planned to generate at least 50 per cent of the Expo’s power on site.
Dubai Expo 2020 expects to create 277,149 jobs between 2013 and 2021. 40% of the of the employment opportunities will be generated in the travel and tourism sector alone.
Dubai Expo 2020 is expected to attract 25 million unique visitors and up to 33 million visits over that six month gala Expo. Dubai is surely going to reap rich dividends from this international expo and the tourism sector shall see steep progress.
