The awards also re-affirm the commitment of the Dubai tourism authority in supporting the initiative of the United Nations’ International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development’. The event is also aimed at supporting the hotels and individuals who have been contributing towards the cause of implementing environmental awareness and are actually adopting processes to make way for sustainability in the tourism industry.
The inaugural award ceremony would be conducted in October 2017 and this is believed to coincide with the Dubai Green Week.
The criteria of the awards would be designed in a way that meets the challenges that are outlined in the Carbon Abatement Strategy of Dubai that is issued by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. As per this criteria, the carbon emissions should be minimized by nearly 16% by the year 2021.
It also supports the Green Growth Strategy of UAE that seeks to bring about a smart economic system that aims to usher in the spirit of sustainability as its principal aim.
These initiatives are in sync with the Dubai Plan 2021 and Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.
Helal Saeed Almarri, the director general of Dubai Tourism said that tourism plays a significant role that is a part of Dubai’s diversification strategy. Raising awareness about the conservation strategies is one of the key pillars of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism initiative.
There would be 20 awards in total and 13 of them would be targeted at hospitality establishments.
The Sustainability Awards are currently open for entries.
All the desert camps and hotel establishments have been called upon to submit their nominations.
