The outdoor tourism facilities in the Dungog Shire have received a boost of $1.332 million in State Government funding.

The Dungog Regional Tourism (DRT) applied for the funding under round two of the Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund.

Michael Johnsen, Member of Parliament, Member for Upper Hunter recently announced the organisation had been successful in its application.

The Chair of DRT, Cameron Archer said the overall project, which is a collaboration with council, the Forestry Corporation and community groups, would capitalise on the unique natural attractions in the Dungog Shire.

He said that they believe the Dungog Shire has a comparative advantage for outdoor recreation whether it is camping, mountain bike riding or bushwalking, he said. This funding will enable us to bring the facilities up to a good standard and increase capacity. The sites to benefit are Gresford Showground and Recreation Area, Paterson Sportsground, Dungog Common, Dungog Showground, Williams River Holiday Park and Chichester Forest (East and West).

Mr Johnsen said that grant will enable infrastructure to grow camping and outdoor recreation on the Crown Land sites. He said that the proposed improvement include improvement to access to some of the sites, improving power supplies and lighting, upgrading camp sites, creating a pump track and upgrading walking trails. The Council anticipates the project to deliver benefits such as increased visitation and expenditure within Dungog, a diversified market base, improved safety for visitors and enhanced visitor experience.

Mr Johnsen said this is one of many new projects across NSW to receive a share of the $50 million available for infrastructure projects that draw tourists from outside the region or encourage them to stay longer and spend more.
