The Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month after significant contribution in the domestic MICE market.
Lindiwe Rakharebe, Durban ICC chief executive mentioned that with the invaluable support of clients and stakeholders the centre was able to achieve milestones.
In 1992 Operation Jumpstart launched the Durban ICC project with the motive of building a modern multipurpose convention centre. At present it has the capacity of hosting 22,000 people in one gathering.
There complex provides 112,000 square meters of flexible exhibition and meeting space after including the Durban International Convention Centre, the Durban ICC Arena and Durban Exhibition Centre.
The Durban ICC was officially opened by Nelson Mandela in 1997 and since then it has hosted important events like the fourth annual BRICS International Competition Conference the World Forestry Congress, the Africa Peace Awards etc. Over the past two decades it has generated R30billion for the national economy. However, it was built at a cost of R746 million.
