The 4th PATAcademy-HCD, under the theme “Human Capital Development – This Decade’s Tourism Challenge“, successfully completed on Thursday, September 4, 2015. The three-day interactive programme took place on June 2-4 at the PATA Engagement Hub in PATA Headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand.
The programme attracted fourteen rising stars from 10 public and private organisations coming from seven destinations. They represent EarthCheck, Australia; Bangladesh Tourism Board; Dhaka Regency Hotel & Resort, Bangladesh; Dusit Worldwide, Thailand; Guam Visitors Bureau; Jetwing Hotels, Sri Lanka; Macau University of Science and Technology, Macau SAR; Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore; Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels; Malaysia; and Tiger Tours LTD, Bangladesh.
Mr Mario Hardy, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) said, “It was my great pleasure to welcome rising star HR executives from various destinations to discuss one of the most crucial topics in our industry that we are facing today. During the 3-day interactive session, we discussed and shared HCD challenges, best practices and solutions among speakers and participants. Participants can apply outputs of the programme to develop effective HCD strategies for their own organisation.”
Professor Dr Walter Jamieson MCIP, College of Innovation, Thammasat University, Thailand, illustrated demand and supply challenges of talents required to meet the current and future demand in travel and tourism industry.
Mr Andrew Chan, CEO, ACI HR Solutions (ACI), Singapore, discussed employee engagement for Generation Y (Gen Y), those born during 1982-2000, and provided an update on employment trends He noted that, “Gen Y tends to ‘work to live’ as opposed to ‘live to work’. They change careers faster, which causes frustration for employers to retain/recruit talented high-performers. This ‘immediate generation’ wants everything now such as recognition and rewards at the time that it’s deserved, as well as up-to-date technology.“
Participants joined a highly interactive and fun session on public speaking led by Mr Jonathan Low CSP, Certified Speaking Professional, Managing Partner, PowerUpSuccess Group of Companies International, Malaysia. Jonathan showed techniques for leaders to communicate and present ideas that will influence and inspire actions. He stated that “For effective presentations, it is essential to create a presentation’s theme, which is easy to remember with open and close transition in between, adding more visuals, less text and rehearsing more.”
Mr Stuart ‘Stu’ Lloyd, Chief Hothead and Business Creativity Consultant, Hotheads, China, led a half-day interactive session to demonstrate to participants how to develop innovation competency and creativity in a team.
Ms Ben Montgomery, Director of Business Relations Management, Centara Hotels & Resorts, Thailand, shared Centara’s HR Best Practices and Programmes that enhance Centara as the leading Thai Company providing “Thainess” to the global arena. These programmes include Management Development Programme (MDP), Centara Career Creation for Children (4Cs), Fast Track Career Development Programme, Succession Planning Programme, Training Roadmap and Team Engagement Activities.
Ms Veera Pardpattanapanich, Rector, Dusit Thani College, Thailand talked about how to prepare for the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in the Hospitality Industry.
Mr Claude Colombie, Director, Sala Bai, Cambodia, presented a case study on Sala Baï Hotel School – Cambodia. He noted that in Cambodia, tourism is the fastest growing industry with 4.5 million visitors in 2014 and the 3rd employment sector, which will face soon the opening of its market, integrating into AEC. Therefore, vocational training in hospitality is a strategic priority for Cambodia and a huge opportunity for disadvantaged young Cambodians to learn a skill. Since 2002, Sala Baï Hotel School trains every year 100 students in hospitality, who all get a job within 5 weeks after graduation.
In addition to the presentations and activities in the PATA Engagement Hub, participants visited Bangkok University’s Tourism Tower, School of Humanities and Tourism Management. The school is equipped with a state-of-the-art facility that provides it students the opportunity to work in a real world setting, offering training opportunities in its hotel simulated laboratories.
