The depth of the earthquake was 131 miles and its epicenter was located about 19 miles from the south-western part of the island. Residents based as far as Guam could sense the tremors.
The earthquake has been acknowledged by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center that is located in Hawaii. However, it refused to issue any tsunami warnings. This is because it released a statement mentioning that the earthquake originated at a great depth beneath the earth.
The Emergency Management Office of the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands said at 8.20 a.m. that no injuries or damages had been reported as a consequence of the earthquake.
Paul Whitmore, spokesman of National Tsunami Warning Centre said that the waves in the largest of the islands, named Saipan were actually less than two inches.
The Northern Mariana Islands are based at a distance of 5,800 miles from the south-western part of Pacific store.
As per the Geological Survey, deeper quakes are known to cause less damage on the surface of the earth as compared to shallow quakes. However, it also said that the tremors of deep quakes can be felt at greater distances.
