East Midlands Trains launches new Train into Work programme for armed forces

eastmidlandstrainsA new work placement scheme has been launched by East Midlands Trains to help military personnel in the last year of their service to make the transition to civilian life.


The ‘Train into Work’ programme’s latest cohort will work with the customer experience team at East Midlands Trains.


Lance Corporal Mark Bunning and Lance Sergeant Andrew Finlan will be based at Nottingham station. Warrant Officer Mark Evans has served since 2007 and will be based at Lincoln Central station. All three have local connections to the East Midlands – Mark Bunning is originally from Derbyshire, Andrew has previously worked in Nottingham and Mark Evans has been waiting to settle in Lincolnshire for some time.


The Train into Work placement includes shadowing station managers and working on services across the East Midlands Trains network. The participants will also shadow train dispatchers, gateline staff, ticket office clerks and team members working on the Passenger Assist programme to provide a bit of extra assistance to disabled customers.


Speaking about the placement, Mark Bunning said: “I jumped at the chance to join the Train into Work placement with East Midlands Trains. Seeing how all the different jigsaw pieces fit together to make the picture whole has been a real eye-opener. I can see all of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into ensuring services are running smoothly and how to communicate this to customers at stations and on board trains.”


“I’m looking forward to getting around and seeing how the business works from an operational perspective and then continuing to develop my customer-service skills.”


Christopher Buckley, Talent Manager for East Midlands Trains, said: “Mark, Andrew and Mark are all obviously exceptionally driven and committed so we wanted to channel this enthusiasm and help develop their customer-focused skills.


“A programme of ongoing support has been set up including interview training, workshops for writing CVs and applications and advice on soft skills that are crucial for transitioning to the civilian workplace.”


“We’re confident that the programme will be invaluable in helping Mark, Andrew and Mark find a new career opportunity – whether that be with East Midlands Trains or within the wider transport sector. It’s the least we can do considering what a great sacrifice they have made for their country over many years.”


David Hornsey, ‎Employer Engagement Manager for the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), who helped to match the positions that East Midlands Trains were seeking to fill with the right candidates, said: “The CTP is delighted to support the Train into Work scheme and to connect Service leavers with opportunities in the rail sector.


“Work placements such as this provide a fantastic forum for those individuals in the process of leaving the armed forces to gain on-the-job experience in the civilian workplace and the feedback I’ve received from the team so far has been extremely positive. We’re looking forward to continuing the Train into Work programme with East Midlands Trains and helping more Service leavers pursue careers within the rail sector.”
